Securing Grants Presentation – There are millions of dollars in grants that can be secured. The easiest way to secure a grant? Ask. If you don’t ask you will never get it. Planning is key to grant writing. You don’t have to be a “grant writer” to be able to secure grants. With a little planning and a few words anyone can write a grant. Wise County has been fortunate to secure a few dollars in funding over the past several years. Jessica will share some of her thoughts on securing grants in these tough economic times.

A description of the Map Modernization will be discussed with the status of where TN is in the project.  Also, links to data and FEMA’s websites will be displayed.  A short instruction on how to determine flood zones in ArcMap will complete the session.

• 11:15 – 11:45 – Title: How safe is your neighborhood? Katharine Bennett, GISP, GIS Division, City of Johnson City
  The safety of a neighborhood is an important indicator of the overall economic and social health of a city. City officials are tasked with creating effective methods for measuring criminal activity and the relationships between criminal offenses and aspects of the urban environment such as parks, night clubs, schools, or grocery stores. Neighborhoods vary in character and urban environment and, in some cases, can be perfect hideaways for drug dealers and users. The safety of a neighborhood relies on partnerships and strategies between neighbors and public safety officials, for planning, outreach, and accountability. Safe, attractive, and welcoming neighborhoods make life better for everyone living in them. A network of great neighborhoods makes a community desirable. Neighborhood crime, if left unchallenged, can contribute to community neglect and disintegration. This study will analyze neighborhood crimes reported to Washington County 9-1-1 between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008 in Johnson City, Tennessee.

• 12:30 – 1:00 Open Street Map, Randal Hale, GISP, North River Geographic Systems, Inc
  Open Street Map is a collaborative project to create a free editable map of the world. Users can implement GPS, Aerial Imagery, and GIS data to create an up to date street map of your town or neighborhood. While accuracy is not of the utmost importance, timeliness is as points of interest can be added in under 10 minutes and be available for public viewing. Recently OSM was used in support of rescue operation in Haiti after the earthquake. Most importantly OSM can be used by educators to preach the importance of geography and spatial awareness to students.
